WASHING AND CARING FOR LEATHER MOTORCYCLE CLOTHING

To get the most out of your highly valued motorcycle clothing, so you can wear it for as long as possible, it is vitally important to wash and care for it. As a rule, motorcycle clothing costs a fair bit, compared to everyday clothing. This is because of the premium protective materials and protective elements involved. Just one of many reasons to look after your motorcycle clothing properly, therefore. But what are the best care techniques to help you do this?

CARING FOR LEATHER MOTORCYCLE CLOTHING

DO’S & DON’TS

Let’s start with what you shouldn’t do. Leather motorcycle clothing must not go in the washing machine or tumble dryer. Immersion in soapy water is a no-no too. These garments require a little extra time, energy, and yes, love. You’ll be set for a whole season after each go.

How to go about it isn’t tricky, but you do however require the right tools. Spray a small test section by hand, pull this section taut and clean using a cotton cloth. Continue in this manner until you have cleaned the entire motorcycle garment. This technique removes all dirt residue. It’s child’s play to wash clothes, uhm, check that; to wash motorcycle clothes.

Do’s

  • Spray a small test section

  • Pull taut

  • Clean with a cotton cloth

  • Repeat the 3 steps above

Don’ts

  • Pop in the washing machine

  • Pop in the tumble dryer

  • Handwash

MAKING YOUR LEATHER MOTORCYCLE CLOTHING LAST LONGER

To ensure your motorcycle clothing lasts for longer, I recommend preventative care. By spraying your motorcycle clothing after cleaning it you render the leather water and dirt-repellent, which in turn means less cleaning! For this, use a leather cleaner or leather wax. Use leather conditioner after a ride, and beeswax when you hang your motorcycle clothing away during the cold season. This helps keep the leather supple, as long as you hang the clothing in a ventilated place. Always air your leather motorcycle clothing after a ride, but never in direct sunlight or another heat source. For optimal results, clean your motorcycle clothing twice a year.

LEATHER MOTORCYCLE CLOTHING CARE TIPS

  1. Always air your leather motorcycle clothing after use;

  2. Never store leather motorcycle clothing in an airtight bag or container;

  3. Never put leather motorcycle clothing in the washing machine or tumble dryer;

  4. Do not expose leather motorcycle clothing for too long to extreme heat or direct sunlight;

  5. Treat your leather motorcycle clothing at least 2x a year with recommended  cleaning products. This will keep the water and dirt-repellent layer in the leather intact and preserves the original condition of the leather;

  6. After cleaning, spray your leather motorcycle clothing with an impregnation agent to nourish the leather and make it water and dirt-repellent again, without impeding its breathability;

  7. Care for glossy or old leather by using special leather wax 2x a year. This will help keep the leather soft and supple.
