Wash & care

To get the most out of your highly valued motorcycle clothing, so you can wear it for as long as possible, it's vitally important to wash and care for it in the right way. As a rule, motorcycle clothing costs a fair bit, all the more reason therefore to look after it. Just as with everyday clothing, motorcycle clothing needs to be regularly cleaned. Did you know a good clean will restore your motorcycle clothing's waterproof properties? That's how crucial caring for your motorcycle clothing is!

MOTORCYCLE CLOTHING WASHING INSTRUCTIONS + TIPS & TRICKS

Caring for and washing your motorcycle clothing is slightly more complex than doing everyday laundry. That's because of the different materials, protective elements, linings and waterproof membranes that must, of course, remain watertight. Many motorcycle jackets and trousers don't have a wash care label that provides specific instructions for the product in question. To help you on your way, we have summarised the wash care instructions per motorcycle clothing product, and share a few tips & tricks on how to clean your motorcycle garments.

CARING FOR LEATHER MOTORCYCLE CLOTHING

  1. Air your motorcycle clothing after use.
  2. Do not store your motorcycle clothing in an airtight container.
  3. Do not put leather motorcycle clothing in the washing machine or tumble dryer.
  4. Do not hang leather motorcycle clothing out in the sun to dry.
  5. Apply cleaning products to your leather motorcycle clothing twice a year. This ensures the water and dirt-repellant layers in the leather remain intact and keeps the leather smelling like new.
  6. Spray your leather motorcycle clothing with an impregnation agent, to nourish it and make it water and dirt-repellent again, without impeding the garment's breathability.
  7. To keep glossy or old leather soft and supple, we recommend applying leather wax twice a year.

WASHING FABRIC MOTORCYCLE CLOTHING

  1. Before use, spray your fabric motorcycle clothing with an impregnation agent. Please note: only use impregnation agents suitable for motorcycle clothing.  Other sprays can impede the breathability of motorcycle clothing with a waterproof membrane.

  2. Remove the linings and protective elements. The thermal lining can be washed separately.

  3. Hang your fabric motorcycle clothing up at room temperature and ensure it is completely dry before you wear it again.

  4. Never hang or lay your wet motorcycle clothing down on or above a radiator.

  5. Never wash fabric motorcycle clothing in the washing machine, unless it has a GORE-TEX membrane.

  6. Always handwash your motorcycle jacket or trousers in lukewarm water, using motorcycle clothing cleaning products. Standard washing detergent can clog the membrane, or even cause it to leak!

  7. Never scrub the fabric motorcycle clothing and membrane with an abrasive sponge.

  8. Do not expose waterproof membranes for too long to extreme heat or too much sunlight.

  9. Never use fabric softener as this destroys a membrane's properties.

WASHING GORE-TEX MOTORCYCLE CLOTHING

  1. A GORE-TEX membrane is made of polytetrafluoroethylene. Let's just abbreviate that to: PTFE. That'll save you some reading time. GORE-TEX requires a different cleaning approach. This robust material is very durable, and can be made to look as good as new after a clean.

  2. Spray your GORE-TEX clothing regularly with an impregnation agent. Please note: only use impregnation agents suitable for motorcycle clothing.  Other sprays can impede the breathability of motorcycle clothing with a GORE-TEX membrane.

  3. Remove the lining and protective elements. The thermal lining can be washed separately.

  4. Always dry your GORE-TEX motorcycle clothing at room temperature. Ensure it is completely dry before you wear it again.

  5. Never hang or lay wet GORE-TEX motorcycle clothing down on a radiator to dry it quicker.

  6. We advise washing GORE-TEX motorcycle clothing by hand. But you can also machine wash it. GORE-TEX is the only membrane that can be machine-washed.

  7. Wash on a 40 degree cycle and select the lowest spin programme, and only use GORE-TEX specific detergents.

  8. Never use fabric softeners or stain removers.

  9. Pro tip: pop your GORE-TEX motorcycle clothing in the tumble dryer. The heat will restore the GORE-TEX properties to as good as new.

  10. After washing and drying, respray your GORE-TEX motorcycle clothing with a GORE-TEX impregnation agent.

WASHING MOTORCYCLE JEANS

  1. Wash motorcycle jeans inside out.

  2. Just as with everyday jeans, you might find the colour and fabric of your motorcycle jeans fades after each wash. Only wash them when absolutely necessary.

  3. Remove all protective elements from the motorcycle jeans.

  4. Wash Kevlar jeans on a maximum 30 degree cycle.

  5. Prior to washing use fabric motorcycle clothing detergents.

  6. Never use fabric softener.

  7. Do not place motorcycle jeans in the tumble dryer.

  8. Motorcycle jeans can bleed dye during the first few washes.
